# How Figa works

Workspaces, expenses, recurring series and the months ahead: the few ideas behind Figa.

Figa plans the bills you know will come: rent, utilities, subscriptions, installments and yearly renewals. You add each bill once with its schedule, and every month, past and coming, shows what it needs, what is paid and what is still to pay. Figa never connects to a bank.

## Workspaces hold your bills

A **workspace** is one set of bills: your home, your business or a project. Each workspace has its own expenses, categories, recipients, tags, members and connections, and one **base currency** that every total is shown in. The base currency is chosen when you create the workspace and cannot be changed later.

Workspaces belong to an **organization**. The organization's plan, Free or Pro, applies to all of its workspaces. See [Workspaces](https://getfiga.com/help/workspaces).

## An expense is one-time or recurring

- **One-time**: a single cost on one date, like a repair or a ticket.
- **Recurring**: a series with a schedule, like rent on the 1st of every month. Figa creates one **occurrence** for each date, so each month lists the bills due in it.

You can change one occurrence (this month's bill was higher), or this and all future ones (the rent went up from March). See [Recurring bills and schedules](https://getfiga.com/help/recurring-bills).

## Three ways to set the amount

- **Fixed amount**: the same every time, like a subscription.
- **Variable monthly bill**: different every month, like electricity. Figa estimates it until you enter the amount from the invoice. See [Variable bills and forecasts](https://getfiga.com/help/bill-forecasts).
- **Price per session**: a service paid per visit, like a cleaner. Figa multiplies the visits in each month by the price. See [Services billed per visit](https://getfiga.com/help/services).

## Paid, unpaid, overdue or skipped

Every occurrence is **Unpaid** until you mark it **Paid**. An unpaid bill past its date becomes **Overdue**. If a payment does not happen this time, **Skip this occurrence** keeps it out of the month without deleting the series. Marking a bill paid only records it in Figa: it does not move any money. See [Mark bills paid](https://getfiga.com/help/mark-paid).

## The months ahead

Because every bill keeps its schedule, the coming months already show their totals. Move between months on the [Dashboard](https://getfiga.com/help/dashboard), compare periods in [Insights](https://getfiga.com/help/insights), and get a reminder before a bill is due with [notifications](https://getfiga.com/help/notifications).

## Free and Pro

The Free plan covers one workspace with up to 20 expenses a month and everything on this page. Pro removes the limits and adds members, more workspaces and CSV import. See [Free or Pro?](https://getfiga.com/help/free-or-pro)
