# Tags

Label expenses across categories, like a trip or a renovation, filter by a tag and see what it cost over the last 12 months.

Tags group expenses that belong together but sit in different categories. "Summer trip" can cover flights, the hotel and car rental; "Renovation" can cover materials, a contractor and a new boiler. One expense can have several tags.

## Tag an expense

In the expense form, open **Tags** and pick one, or type a new name and choose **Create**. New tags are created when you save the expense.

On a recurring bill, tags you set in the series apply to the whole series. To tag one occurrence or future ones only, open that expense from the monthly list.

## Filter and compare

- Filter the expense list by a tag to see only its costs.
- Open a tag to see its total for the last 12 months, the amount by month, its top categories and its expenses.
- In [Insights](https://getfiga.com/help/insights), group a period by tag. An expense with two tags appears under both, but the total counts it once.

## Manage tags

Add, rename or delete tags in **Organize → Tags**. Deleting a tag does not delete the expenses that had it.
